Where to find home & garden decor at affordable prices

Harvest PumpkinThanksgiving celebration is fast approaching and with the days numbered, doing a room makeover according to the colors of a thanksgiving theme can be a pressure. Another limitation that most of us are more concerned with is the budget allotted for this season.  Don’t let these things bother you, there are ways  to get around your budget and still come up with a wonderful thanksgiving interior design for your room, for a wonderful thanksgiving celebration for you, your family and friends.

Collect. Every time you walk home or get home, make time to gather dry leaves, twigs, branches, pinecones and acorns outdoors. Collect heaps of this material until you have enough to decorate your cabinets, windows and countertops.

Optimize. Pumpkins have always been associated with Halloween but this time, you can also use it for thanksgiving decoration. You can place small pumpkins and gourds alongside your thanksgiving centerpiece or arrange from three to five larger pumpkins of different sizes in your foyer by the front door.

Centerpiece. A centerpiece should grab everyone’s attention. Putting one on your thanksgiving table adds to the spirit of the celebration. You don’t have to spend a lot just to buy a thanksgiving centerpiece. Simply glue in the leaves, branches, twigs and acorns together in a likely pattern. Adorn it with ribbons to compliment your decoration.

Blend. Think of autumn colors: yellow, gold, green, red and brown and a how your furniture, curtains and other items can blend into this theme. You can use one autumn color for your throw pillows, perhaps a warm yellow for the curtains, burnt red or brown carpet and so on, it’s your choice. Stay in line with the colors and you’ll have a great interior design without busting your budget this thanksgiving celebration.

The hearth is an area of the home which the family gathers around, representing togetherness and unity.  As such, your mantle clock should be an important part of your family legacy.  Who doesn’t remember hearing the sound of a mantle clock dinging on the hours each day in Grandma or Grandpa’s house?  The sound of the clock, both ticking, and announcing the passing of the hours is an important family memory.

Choosing a mantle clock should represent not only your aesthetic style, but also the sound by which you want your children and grand children to remember the passing of the hours.

Hummingbird-Metal-WeathervaneWhether you’ve been invited to a housewarming party, or simply know a couple new homeowners, a housewarming gift is a time old tradition which will delight new homeowners and allow you to make your mark on their décor.  For townhouses and condominiums, consider a lighting fixture.  Whether it be a lamp, lantern, or glass sculpture; chances are the new homeowners will have some area of the home that could use a bit more light.  For a house with a yard, garden decor is a great addition that new homeowners are sure not to have.  Consider statuaries, fountains, or unique stepping stones.

Whatever you decide to buy, be sure to find something both you and the new homeowners will appreciate.  It will make your day to come over to their home another time and see your gift on display.

Outdoor Lighting

Traditionally gardens are thought of landscapes to be viewed and appreciated during the daylight hours.  However, with an outdoor lighting system, you can appreciate your garden in the early morning or evening hours as well.  Outdoor lighting systems can include simple fixtures like the garden lantern, but also ground lighting or outdoor lamps.  The goal is to accentuate the different types of flora in your garden with light to be viewable and also appear different than during daylight hours. In addition, you will be able to see and hear the nocturnal insects and animals that live in your garden but are inactive during the day.

Improving Your Garden

Is your garden looking a little plain?  Have you got the flowers, the shrubs, even a couple trees, but still can’t figure out what’s missing?  Adding stonework to a garden can soften the landscape and bring a more natural feel to a setting with extensive vegetation.  Amongst garden stonework, there are dozens of options including statuettes, chiseled rocks and boulders, fountains, and garden stepping stones. It doesn’t take an expert to place these kinds of stonework in an attractive manner.  Treat them just like plants, clear out a space, note the height and girth of the stonework (ensuring they don’t dwarf or become hidden behind the surrounding vegetation), and simply place them to your liking.

Fall Leaves1. Go through your cupboards and drawers to find items that can be used as props in your fall display. If you find that warm throw you forgot about, bring it out and toss it over your couch. Try layering fabrics on your tables. Pretty blankets and quilts with oranges, yellows, greens and browns can add to your fall theme.

2. Take a nature walk. Gather organic elements like acorns, pine-cones, seed pods, bark, even stones can be used as display in bowls around the home. Wildflowers and dried grasses can be displayed in pitchers or a vase. Press leaves and strew them on tables and around centerpieces.

3. Bring out the candles! If you put away your candles for winter, now is the time to bring them to center stage. Gather groups of inexpensive votives and tie together with scraps of raffia.

4. Simmering apple peels and cinnamon sticks on the stove will add the scent of the season to your home, or invest in a scented candles. They are relatively inexpensive and they come in a wide variety of scents.

5. Celebrate the tastes of the harvest season. Keep apples and pomegranates out in bowls, store squashes on counter-tops, pick up a pumpkin or two and use as a centerpiece, or pile a couple next to the kitchen door. Gourds displayed in a basket make a great centerpiece

Most of all, we should take the time to celebrate this special season with our families and appreciate the comforts our own homes have to offer.

bathroom linen cabinetEvery bathroom does not have a closet, and many houses also lack a linen closet or extra space to store towels, toilet paper and other bathroom necessities.  One solution is to acquire a bathroom linen cabinet, which can become a focal point of your bathroom decor if you choose.

A bathroom linen cabinet can not only store linens and bathroom items, but serve as a display case for knickknacks you have chosen to complement your bathroom theme.

Morocco and its Style

Moroccan candle lanternsMorocco is often viewed as an oasis of inspiration for writers, painters, and weary travelers.  Numerous cultures and styles intersect in Morocco, which has several official languages.   Moroccan style home decor has become very popular in America recently, particularly in the Southwest and California regions, where there are many pueblos and pueblo-inspired homes.

Moroccan style incorporates vibrant reds, greens, and blues as well interspersed with metallic accents. Exotic plants, terra cotta tiles, and walls painted in textured methods are other Moroccan style hallmarks.  Moroccan light fixtures are world-famous for their craftsmanship, evoking an atmosphere of interesting characters and sweet-smelling spices.  Moroccan candle lanterns resemble highly regarded lighting produced in Morocco, but do not require electrical power, and their smaller size which makes them easy to incorporate into any home decor.

French Provincial Photo Frame ScreenMy wife and I just returned from a wonderful weekend staying with friends of ours’ who live in upstate New York.  They live in a beautiful three bedroom log home with an L shaped loft which serves as their master bedroom.  The kitchen, living room, bathroom and the other two bedrooms are located on the ground floor.  Although the kitchen and living room share one open space, each room is clearly defined with the strategic placement of the furniture.  The same holds true up in the loft.  Here screens were used along with furniture to divide this space into three separate spaces.   Using room dividers to section off large spaces makes the most of the area while still allowing one to enjoy open floor-plan living.

Multi-purpose areas require some form of internal organization to avoid chaos and confusion. Room dividers don’t increase the space at your disposal, but they make better sense of it.
