Small SpacesDecorating small spaces requires thought and imagination in order to get the most out of them. The objective in decorating smaller places is normally to make them appear larger. There are several ways to achieve this illusion.

Keep it simple silly (KISS). The more simple the decoration is kept the fewer items you have filling the space in the room or apartment. Crowding will make you feel suffocated and lose the effect you were trying to create.

Mirrors are excellent at giving off the illusion of larger space. You have the option of several small staggered mirrors, larger panel mirrors or one large well-placed mirror. These will reflect not only the furnishings depending on where they are placed but the open space as well.

Colors should be subtle and not too bold; bold colors should be limited to a few pillows and maybe a throw but not the entire furniture selection.

Pictures are great for decorating. Whether they are family photos or prints of things that you find interesting, prints and photos will add to the look of the room.

Smaller furniture is ideal for the smaller spaces. Exposed legs are best for small spaces as they give the illusion of more space. The furniture should be arranged so that it doesn’t interfere with where you are walking in the room.

Lamps should be utilized, whether it is a table lamp or a free standing lamp. Lights used in the ceiling will make the ceiling look lower. Natural light should be utilized whenever possible. Light colored curtains that allow for the light to come through will give the illusion of more space.

Thanksgiving TurkeyNow that your home is decorated, and your guests invited, there is only one thing left.  Thanksgiving dinner and what to do with the turkey!  Here is an interesting article I found at http://ezinearticles.com/  by Jeffrey Meier you may find useful when preparing your turkey this Thanksgiving.

Happy Thanksgiving

BHG-Pic Last week on June 2, 2008, I wrote an article with some tips on how easily and inexpensively you could design a room without calling Ty Pennington and his crew for a total make over.  In that article I mentioned that you should consider the look of a room and how it will connect to the adjacent rooms, especially in homes with open floor plans or rooms that connect through wide openings.

One of the fastest ways of doing this is with paint.  Using complementary colors in adjacent rooms can create a pleasing flow through the rooms.  This article by Better Homes and Gardens gives you 5 Ways to Connect Rooms with Color.  I hope you enjoy this article as much as I did.

My name is John and I am a husband, father, grandfather, owner and webmaster of the website Treasure Hill Cottage.  I worked thirty one years in the transportation filed at one of the three major airports in the New York / New Jersey Metropolitan area.   I held the position as a Contract Services Administrator for the last ten years of my employment and retired December 2002.

I started treasurehillcottage.com in May 2007 and have been told that it looks great, that I offer nice products at reasonable prices and that the site is user friendly.  That’s mostly from family and friends.  Not that I don’t respect and appreciate their comments, but I feel they may be a little partial and tilting the scale in my favor.

By entering the blogosphere I hope to get impartial reviews of my site www.treasurehillcottage.com from the Blogging Community.  Your suggestions and comments will be considered when making changes or additions to the site.  Your feedback will help me develop a more functional and user friendly website.

Also on this blog I will provide you with articles, blogs and other websites that I hope you will find interesting and informative.  Along with tips and tricks for decorating your home and for sprucing up the garden.

Now I can add “I am a blogger” to the list above.
