My name is John and I am a husband, father, grandfather, owner and webmaster of the website Treasure Hill Cottage.  I worked thirty one years in the transportation filed at one of the three major airports in the New York / New Jersey Metropolitan area.   I held the position as a Contract Services Administrator for the last ten years of my employment and retired December 2002.

I started treasurehillcottage.com in May 2007 and have been told that it looks great, that I offer nice products at reasonable prices and that the site is user friendly.  That’s mostly from family and friends.  Not that I don’t respect and appreciate their comments, but I feel they may be a little partial and tilting the scale in my favor.

By entering the blogosphere I hope to get impartial reviews of my site www.treasurehillcottage.com from the Blogging Community.  Your suggestions and comments will be considered when making changes or additions to the site.  Your feedback will help me develop a more functional and user friendly website.

Also on this blog I will provide you with articles, blogs and other websites that I hope you will find interesting and informative.  Along with tips and tricks for decorating your home and for sprucing up the garden.

Now I can add “I am a blogger” to the list above.

The British (Colonial) Invasion

British Colonial décor If you find that your house has a room, such as a guest room, which may not fit thematically with the other rooms, you may want to consider giving it a simple British Colonial look.  Giving your room the British treatment doesn’t have to require a major repaint; instead it may involve purchasing some common pieces to give the space a pronounced feel.

Replicating British Colonial décor could be simply placing fine-polished picture frames on the walls with black and white or sepia-toned photographs or reprints of old Sears Roebuck catalogs.  Also placing a tiny weaved or wooden chest on a bedside table would be a great look.  Tropical plants can also assist in filling out some of the empty space in the room.

These little additions with a bit of effort could greatly improve upon a room that may have just been the plain part of your home.

home décorThanks to outlets like the Home and Garden Channel and the Learning Channel, home improvement ideas are easier than ever.  The thing about those television shows is that they give the twofold illusion that you need to knock down a wall or two and have a few thousand dollars at your disposal.

Sometimes it’s something as easy as finding the perfect clock or a statue for your garden to improve upon your home décor.  Making an attractive home can simply rely on rearranging and getting the right pieces to accent the beauty of your domain.

There are plenty of resources out there — be it online, TV or magazines — that give helpful tips on how to give your home a makeover without having to put a huge dent on your bank account.  Going to thrift stores, swap meets and local antique shops are great places to start to find those perfect additions to your home.  The internet also opens up infinite possibilities with the myriad of online home décor stores, which are often reasonably priced.

There are ways to beautify your home without having to hire a professional decorator or a contractor and spending tons of cash to do so.  All you need is a little imagination and perhaps a well-placed bird feeder.
