During the summer, it’s a great idea to start cleaning up that backyard and really grow yourself a nice little garden.  Some of the most understated accent pieces are decorative birdhouses.

By getting a bird house, you can really add some personality to your backyard and make it inviting for both our winged friends, as well as our actual human friends.

BHG-Pic Last week on June 2, 2008, I wrote an article with some tips on how easily and inexpensively you could design a room without calling Ty Pennington and his crew for a total make over.  In that article I mentioned that you should consider the look of a room and how it will connect to the adjacent rooms, especially in homes with open floor plans or rooms that connect through wide openings.

One of the fastest ways of doing this is with paint.  Using complementary colors in adjacent rooms can create a pleasing flow through the rooms.  This article by Better Homes and Gardens gives you 5 Ways to Connect Rooms with Color.  I hope you enjoy this article as much as I did.

Sun-Face PlanterDo you want to add interest and color to your entry way, patio, or garden?  Do you want a larger variety of plants, but do not have the space?  Containers are a great and inexpensive way to brighten any space.  The best part is that the project can be an ongoing work in progress.  Start with a few planters at first and add as your budget permits.  Add more interest by introducing a statue or a fountain if the space permits.

Here is an interesting article I came across at www.Move.com .  The article, written by Meg

Metal Rose Wall SconcesBecause wall sconces can direct light in a number of different ways it is easy to get enough light while adding a decorative touch to any home decor.  Typically used in hallways or corridors, wall sconces are easy to install and can either contain an electric lighting fixture, which may require minimal electrical work, or contain stands for candles, which only requires mounting on the wall. This is a much simpler way to add a beautiful accent anywhere in your home.

Wall sconces come in a variety of different styles and sizes, which makes it very easy to find one or two that will fit almost any décor.  They are much less expensive than buying ceiling fixtures or floor lamps. They take up only a small amount of wall space, making it possible to hang shelves, pictures and other wall decor along with your sconce.

You can use a wall sconce to set a certain mood in a room.  You can keep your bathroom feeling peaceful with a metal rose sconce, or bring some excitement to your bedroom with a leaf wall sconce.  Because you can use either candles or light fixtures, you can find something that will work in almost any room in your home.

39040-victorian-wood-cabinet.jpgYou don’t need to be an expert or a professional interior designer to be able to create a dramatic change in your own space or room in your home, and you don’t need to spend a lot of money.  Designing a room for whatever purpose or style you want can be done easily. By maintaining a good level of creativity and dedication, you will achieve the look that you want for any space or room in your home decor.

First of all, a general clean up of the room undergoing the makeover.  Remove all the items that you want to replace with the new.  Try recycling the items you remove by incorporating them elsewhere in your home.  But above all avoid cluttering a room with too many items. To create a soothing feeling, it’s better to only see a few well organized pieces.

  • Play with different colors and sizes of pillows on your furniture.
  • Organize the items you always need to be readily available for you, by putting them in a fancy container within reach.
  • Rearranging the furniture in a room also offers more option for you. Try out different arrangements before deciding on what you like best.
  • Don’t forget to utilize rugs to their maximum level. Rugs could either blend in or be in contrast with the entire concept of your design.

The most efficient way of designing a room in your house is to first experiment with the furniture and current decoration that you already have available. The reason is simple. It prevents an individual from spending money on a concept that won’t be as effective as the original idea. Play around and rearrange the furniture to different positions and angles. From there, think about how you would like the room to look. You can even visualize the entire look of a room to how it should connect to the adjacent rooms so it doesn’t appear as if it is the only furnished space in the entire house.

If you are planning to change the paint on the walls as well; you might want to test a small portion of the desired color on a small area. This way if the paint doesn’t dry to the desired color you had in mind you wouldn’t have spent a lot of money on a color you’re not pleased with.  Remember, paint color looks different with natural, florescent or incandescent lighting.   This will affect the way a color looks in the store as to how it looks on your walls.

When choosing drapes or curtains, simply bring with you a fabric swatch or paint chip that has the exact color that you desire.

In today’s economy, materials for interior decorating are expensive. Purchasing the right items for your design concept will take some planning.  I hope the tips mentioned will make your interior designing easier and affordable too.
