It’s hard to believe that my Grandson is going to be two in one week; Labor Day is only two weeks away and with that the start of a new school year. If you’re among the millions of parents with elementary school children and are shopping for clothes and school supplies, as hectic as it may seem consider yourself lucky. Just be thankful you don’t have a child starting his or her first year of college.
For those of you who do have children starting their first year of college, congratulations! You are excited because your son or daughter is leaving home for the first time to go live in a dorm. Dorm room decorating can be rather tricky due to the limited space available. Here are some suggestions you may want to pass along to your child before the start to decorate.
The closet door can be utilized to keep an erasable calendar so that their schedule is always in sight. A shoe storage bag can be hung alongside or below to hold small items that they have trouble keeping up with. The door to the dorm room itself can hold a small corkboard for posting reminders that they will see on the way out or notes to their roommate.
Their desk is the place where they will perform most of their work. They can decorate and organize it all at once. There are organizational sets for desks designed to look good and hold the essentials for them at the same time. How about this digital alarm clock that features a calendar and built-in calculator.
The space by the bed can be accented with a small rug that matches the rest of the room. They can purchase a small wastebasket and paint it to match. The space under the bed is seldom used for storage. Get them storage containers on wheels, decorate them and use them as draws under the bed. (This works if the bedding doesn’t go all the way to the floor.)
The need for additional space gives yet another decorating opportunity. If the dorm room allows, they can have a bench or ottoman with a top that opens. It is not only a good place to sit or prop your feet but they can store backpacks and books that they are not using in them as well. On the other hand, even clothing that you don’t use everyday can be stored in them.
When dealing with the small space of a dorm room it is important that you pay attention to the detail.
